Piggyback - Part 2

New icon designer joins the team

July 6, 2008 – 11:47 am

We are proud to welcome a new member to the team.

Jean-Michel Thériault is our new icon designer and you can see some of his work on his website http://www.oterio.com.

It took us too long to find the right person, but we wanted someone with a specization in icon design. We hope we can have our top priority icons ready by the end of July but the deadline is approaching fast.

Now hiring icon designer

July 1, 2008 – 3:18 pm

Attention attention all talented icon designers!

We are in dire need of a skilled graphist to redraw all our icons for Piggyback by the end of July. Right now, all icons in our project are (badly) hand-drawn or taken from open-source projects. Ideally, we would need these icons in SVG format.

We would also love to hear from you if you’re specialized in user interfaces.

Frandroid.com Interview

June 26, 2008 – 10:48 am

We’ve just been interviewed by one of the main French Android websites Frandroid. For the first time, We’ve developed our views on Piggyback and Android in great length. Unfortunately for those who can’t read French, this could prove a hard read.

Venturebeat.com sees us in the top ten for ADC2

May 28, 2008 – 9:05 am

And to be honest, so do we…

Venturebeat interviewed most of the 50 adc1 winners to ask us our thoughts about the Android platform. They also gave their top ten for the adc round 2 and included Piggyback in this top ten.

What would you do with $25,000?

May 20, 2008 – 7:32 am

Technically, we don’t have the money in our bank accounts yet, but we’ve already started spending it.

Here are a few ideas, keeping in mind that $25,000 = 16 000€:

  • Rent a server! We had to take into account such factors as scalability for future development.
  • Recruit people. This is the hard part…The deadline is approaching quickly and it’s very difficult to find what we want with so little time at our disposal (Icon designer, Server specialist etc.)
  • Gear up! We bought two shiny new laptops to “increase productivity” (or watch blu-rays…) and this has helped a lot. Starting Android’s emulator in 10 seconds instead of 3 minutes really helps!

Meeting the IRS in Paris

May 14, 2008 – 1:06 pm

To be honest, winning $25,000 is not something we are used to. Besides, Google was clear about not helping the winners to deal with tax issues.

So, that led us to investigate at the American Embassy in Paris at the IRS desk. I must admit that the welcome was very warm and pleasant and they helped us fill out Google’s forms as much as possible, warning us that it would be very difficult to find a specialist in French-American tax treaties…

On the other side, the French confirmed that the “challenge” could be considered as a game under French law, and thus, should not be taxable (yay!).

Here’s food for though with a famous fable by Jean de la Fontaine.

Android Developer Challenge Round 1

May 10, 2008 – 7:20 am

We are pleased to announce that Piggyback has been awarded a €25,000 grant as part of the Google Android Challenge.
Through hard work and dedication, our application was ready in time for the contest, with its core components already fully functionnal.
We hope that this grant will allow us to develop Piggyback a lot further and bring us much needed publicity. The larger the user-base, the easier it will be for people to use Piggyback successfuly. Stay tuned for more.
